NEWSLETTER MARCH, 2010

A   BRIEF NOTE FROM PRESIDENT CASSIE STARR

On February 26, 2010, Congregation Havurah Shalom hosted a volunteer appreciation night.  This was a very special program honoring all of our Congregants that participated in our Holocaust exhibit  "A Reason to Remember".  We are grateful to all our members who gave their time and their hearts to this project.  I am pleased to report to you that we had 201 tours going through our Georgetown Library Holocaust exhibit.  Also, there were over 1600 people that saw the exhibit.   I am so proud of our members accomplishments.  Thank you for making a difference in so many lives.

We are fortunate to have had both the Georgetown Library and Bill Morgan participating in  our "A Reason to Remember" event.  Bill Morgan's life stories gave us much to think about.  We are honored he was able to be our guest speaker.  We are also thankful for the Georgetown Library's participation.     With that in mind, our Congregation has donated $500 to the Georgetown Library.  We have also sent $500 to the Bill Morgan Foundation.

We will be celebrating Passover this month.  I wish you and all your family and friends a Happy Passover.

TREASURER’S REPORT – Allan Milder

EDITOR OF THE NEWSLETTER & COMMUNICATIONS COMMITTEE CHAIR - Steve Harr

We have increased the security for our Member’s Only area as it was relatively easy for knowledgeable users to bypass the old password system.  This strengthened area will better protect our confidential information and, hopefully, no one will be inconvenienced by the change.  Please go to the area as we have posted an updated roster with all of the new members listed.

With reference to our major project, “A Reason to Remember”, the letters keep pouring in.  All have a very consistent theme; they offer thanks for giving our community a meaningful presentation about a horrific period in world history and a teaching moment about tolerance.  Further down the page you’ll find thank you letters from Mayor Garver, and the Library for our donation of $500.00 to the Friends of the Library Fund and a thank you to all who participated from the Exhibit Committee Chair, Lenora Hausman. Now that the exhibit is over, all of you who participated in the project should give yourselves a pat on the back and take a nice rest but not for too long.  There are still many activities and committees within CHS that can use your help.  If you have any interest in being on a committee, here is the list of people to call:  Communications Committee - Steve Harr; Fund Raising Committee - Murray Greenberg; Outreach Committee - Joanne Blumenthal; Membership Committee - Mary Ann Lish; Religious Committee - Steve Smith or Marty Green (the committee could use some Oneg Hosts)  Social Committee - Co-Chair Mike Rosenberg.

Don’t forget to check the community events page on chstx.org.

OUTREACH COMMITTEE - Joanne Blumenthal, Board Liaison - Letters of Thanks

From Mayor George Garver addressed to Joanne Blumenthal:

Thank you to the Congregation Havurah Shalom for the generous donation to the Georgetown Library. The kind contribution will certainly be beneficial for the library’s expansion of their book and video collection.  We were honored to host the traveling Holocaust exhibit, and I know that it touched the hearts and minds of everyone that experienced the tour.

I certainly appreciate your thoughtful commendations of our library staff.  Please know that your tribute to the Georgetown Library is greatly valued, and we will continue to be thankful for the experience.

From Judy Fabry, Library Administrative Assistant:

Thank you for your recent donation of $500, to be used to purchase books and DVD’s.  We very much appreciate your thoughtfulness and your kind words about our staff’s cooperation during the month that A Reason to Remember was being exhibited.

The high levels of organization and professionalism with which the Congregation handled all aspects of the exhibit made us proud to be a part of this project.  Your dedication to educating our community was inspiring and we welcome future opportunities to collaborate with you.

From our own Lenora Hausman, Chair of the Event

“A Reason to Remember” will long be remembered by our 63 volunteers from CHS as well as by the community of Georgetown. It was the most well attended exhibit the library has ever hosted.  Approximately 1600 adults and children went through the exhibit in 201 tours and it that many hundreds more viewed it on their own.  It is estimated that approximately 3000 people in total saw this exhibit.  Our many docents have shared heartwarming stories with me and found the experience to be most fulfilling.  This project was successful because CHS members came forth and supported it as patrons and volunteered their time.  Together, we made it happen.  My heart felt thanks.
